Getting Indian rupee lakhs / crores formatting in Excel

Formatting currency in your excel sheet, with Indian currency formatting – seems like it should be as simple as a couple of clicks right?
It’s a little more than that!

Here’s a ridiculously large number I’d want to format into Indian Currency.

Right click on the cell, select Format Cells.
Then select Custom from the ‘Category’ list and paste this into the Type – input box:

[>=10000000]₹##\,##\,##\,##0;[>=100000] ₹##\,##\,##0;₹##,##0

Voila!

Also, here on, this will be available in the list of custom formatting list for you to apply anywhere else!
